Visa Process for Foreign Nationals

Foreign nationals who wish to travel to India specifically for medical treatment must obtain a Medical Visa (MED Visa) or an e-Medical Visa, depending on their nationality and duration of treatment.

1. Types of Medical Visas

A. e-Medical Visa

  • Applied completely online.
  • Generally valid for 60 days.
  • Permits multiple/triple entries during the validity period.
  • Suitable for short-term treatment.

B. Regular Medical Visa (MED)

  • Issued by an Indian Embassy/Consulate.
  • Usually granted for 6 months and may be issued for up to 1 year depending on the treatment plan.
  • Can be extended in India if medically required.

2. Documents Required

Foreign patients generally need:

  1. Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity).
  2. Recent passport-size photographs.
  3. Medical records/reports showing the need for treatment.
  4. Appointment letter or invitation from the Indian hospital.
  5. Proof of financial capability to cover treatment and stay.
  6. Return or onward travel ticket (may be required).

3. Medical Attendant Visa (MED-X / MED-2)

Family members accompanying the patient must apply separately for a Medical Attendant Visa.

  • Normally up to two attendants are permitted.
  • Visa validity is linked to the patient’s Medical Visa.
  • The hospital letter should indicate that attendant support is required.

4. Hospital Requirements

The treatment must be at an established, recognized, or specialized hospital in India. Many Indian missions require a hospital admission/appointment letter before issuing the visa.

5. FRRO Registration

Foreign nationals holding Medical Visas valid for more than 180 days are generally required to register with the appropriate authority, such as the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), within the prescribed period after arrival.

6. Visa Extension

Medical Visas can be extended within India when:

  • Further treatment is medically necessary.
  • A supporting certificate is provided by the treating hospital.
  • Approval is obtained from the FRRO/FRO.

To support a Medical Visa application, hospitals should issue:

  • Appointment/Admission Letter
  • Treatment Plan
  • Estimated Cost of Treatment
  • Expected Duration of Stay
  • Name of Treating Consultant
  • Passport details of patient (as per records)

These documents help the patient obtain a Medical Visa from the nearest Indian Embassy/Consulate
